Back home .......

I got back home late last night. My sister and I took a trip to High Point, North Carolina last week. My youngest nephew is a sophomore at High Point University. Last weekend was their winter family weekend event. My brother-in-law is a minister, so Sundays are his main workday and he was unable to attend. Sis asked if I'd go with her. She wanted to check out some of the many furniture outlets in High Point while we were there. We saw some nice furniture, but didn't buy anything. It was fun to look though.

The University provided lots of entertainment for the weekend. We went to a concert by Eddie From Ohio on Friday. I had never heard of them, but they put on a good show. The group is from Virginia and consists of four members (I don't know where Ohio in their name came from). Their music is part country, part folk.

Saturday afternoon we attended a beautiful choral concert put on by The University Singers, Chapel Choir, and Chamber Singers. My nephew sang with the Chamber Singers. He is a talented singer and will be singing with his group at Carnegie Hall in March.

On Saturday evening we attended a magic show put on by Ryan Oakes. We were sitting in the second row and had a good view of the stage and what he was doing, but were unable to determine how he did the tricks.

The weather was cold and damp most of the time. I took a few pictures yesterday before we left. High Point University is a fast growing school and has a beautiful campus.

There are many water features surrounded by green areas through out the campus.

These 16 foot rocking chairs are called the Dream Big Chairs. They encourage the students to have big dreams and to set high goals.

Lifelike statues of famous people can be found on benches all over campus. Here Thomas Jefferson takes a break to read.

Mark Twain enjoys a pipe while relaxing

You can join Gandhi on his bench.

If you are ever in High Point, take a quick tour of the campus. You will be impressed.

Sounds like a nice few days and that campus looks amazing, is it new build made to look older? I love the statues they add quirkiness, there is a similar one at the entrance to Navy Pier in Chicago.

Most of the buildings were completed in the last few years. They are new build in a classic style.

What a marvellous campus! So very, very different from my university experience many years ago!

I just love those statues! Are there any women, just to encourage the girls??

Sounds like you had a nice time. Lots of new buildings on this campus, but a lot of trees I noticed. Very nice though.

Very impressive campus. I would love to share a bench with Twain, Jefferson or Gandhi. What a neat idea.
Carnegie Hall??? Wow, hope you get to go.

Sounds like you had a wonderful mini-vacation. I attended a Shakespeare Institute at High Point back in the 80s. Looks like the school has really grown since then.

Loved the benches and chairs.

It looks like you got a different kind of furniture to look at once you got there as opposed to the collection that you were going to see. Those large chairs are enormous and it is something special to be able to sit alongside all of those famous people. Lovely place and photos by the way.

A local man here builds those huge rocking chairs.

High Point is a beautiful campus. I have been in NC several times and Ossed through High Point w/o stopping.

Your description reminds me of Fort Roots in North Little Rock. Many buildings have historic designation. New buildings are built in likenes to the old ones, whidh gives a pleasing appearance to the campus. It is part of the VA Administration whidh also has another facility in Little Rock, too.

Interestingly, many of my students have gone on to High Point, but I've never visited the campus. The campus is really lovely.

I need a new sofa -- should have come along with you.

Thank you for taking us on a visit to High Point! I used to hear about High Point a lot growing up in Danville, but I don't think I was ever there. They do have some great furniture there.

My goodness, this brings back NO memories at all, although I lived in High Point during my teenage years, and right across Montliew Avenue from what was then the main buildings of the college, now a university. My sister graduated from the college way back when,
(1964, I think).

I left High Point for the final time in 1961 but I wouldn't even know the place now (I had moved to CA in 1959 and then back to NC to stay with my parents in 1960 while my husband was overseas).

As the NC writer Thomas Wolfe wrote, "You can't go home again." Scary isn't it? Dianne

What an truly impressive campus! I love the 'Dream' chairs. I think I'd be very proud if I had graduated from there.
My university was a sort of 1960s scruffy place)
