Chairs .....

I have two swivel rockers with a matching ottoman in my living room that I got years ago. The set is beginning to show wear, as it has survived two large dogs and countless cats. The fabric on the arms is worn and there are picks from the cats on the back of one of the chairs.

Hubby and I decided to go out shopping for new chairs this morning. First we went to Farmville to Green Front Furniture.   If you check their site, you will see that they occupy 12 different warehouses, equivalent in size to 12 football fields. You would think I would be able to find something that I liked. But no ... everything was either too big, too gaudy, the wrong color, or uncomfortable. I think there was just too much to look at and it was cold in those old warehouses. So we left and went to a couple of chain stores and a mom and pop store and still couldn't find anything.

If the set I have was better quality, I would get it reupholstered. I'm just afraid if I put much money in it, it would fall apart the next day.

So it looks like for the time being, I will keep my old chairs. They are comfortable and I don't have to worry too much about messing them up. Just don't look at them too closely.

Sometimes I think there are just too many choices and nothing much is of quality anymore.

I've had several pieces recovered when, like you, I couldn't find something new that suited me. I've not been unhappy yet. Check around and look into references, etc. There are good craftsmen out there.

Oops. I should have said to ask the person to look at the frames. Sometimes, they may be wobbly or loose, but can be tightened up and secured.

Sometimes we find out that what we already have is way better than replacements, Mary. Perhaps putting some sort of throw on the chairs would work vs. reupholstering.

We had a sofa like that, and I was exceptionally sad when we found someone who wanted it! And we have never found anything so comfortable instead, apart from a recliner chair I bought for myself after the trouble with my back. And even that is declining rather than reclining - so we will be looking around - and this time I want to get it right!

What about slipcovers? I've bought some online—one for a recliner, another for an overstuffed chair and ottoman.

Two thoughts:

1. I do my shopping online. It helps to have an idea of what you want. You might go on to a "real" store to try out the chairs from there.

2. My granddaughter made slip covers for my favorite chair. Also I have the chairs the dogs use covered with dog blankets I can wash.

I know about "picked" furniture. We have furniture scarred by cats from years ago.

So, I live with mice. Dianne

To uphostery or not. I have been that route on a very expensive working lift chair. It came back shoddily done and all the electric wires and equipment just crammed in the cavity. Before two weeks one of the two motors broke, and I discovered the heat did not work.

Heat is not repairable without tearing the uphostery apart. I replaced the motor. I will not repeat that expensive mistake. I can buy the same chair by doubling what I paid for the shoddy uphostery job.

I hear you on the holes made by loving cats, I think maybe I just need to believe they add character! I have also thought of re-upholstering but not sure.

You sounded like Goldilocks!

I'd look into getting them reupholstered. I had my kitchen chairs redone (a little different--they're vinyl) and it was the best thing I ever did because I really love the set. Just shop around. I've heard of people having both good and bad results depending on the skill of the reupholsterer. Good luck!
