"Girls in Trucks" is about Sarah Walters, a South Carolina debutante, and several of her fellow Camellias. While growing up in Charleston, they are taught to be proper ladies. However, when they leave to make a life in New York City, they find themselves coping in dangerous ways. Sarah has a series of bad relationships and jobs. Two of her childhood friends - Bitsy and Charlotte - also move to New York, and we see Bitsy marry a wealthy man and become even snobbier than before and Charlotte become a drug addict. Their friend Annie stays in Charleston and struggles to find someone for herself.
I was disappointed in this book. I expected a story about southern girls and southern life, instead it's a story about girls who dislike the south and move to New York. The characters are depressing and not very likable. The book has no plot or story line. It seems to be a group of unconnected vignettes.
It took me a long time to read this book and I had to make myself finish it. There are people who have really enjoyed it, but it just wasn't for me.

Thanks! I had considered this, but will avoid it. Too many other good books to read. Right now I'm re-reading STRAIGHT MAN by Richard Russo. It's one of my favorites.
It's awful when you know it's not your thing but you have to get to the end. Hope the next read is better.
