Raised garden beds #2 .........

We finally had a warm sunny day, so we worked some more on our raised garden beds. First we had to take up the railroad ties that were already there. Some were totally eaten by termites and fell apart easily. The others we cut into smaller pieces with the chain saw, so we could load them on the wagon and take them away.

Next we put the beds together using metal corner brackets. The hard part was getting the beds level. Our yard slopes, so we would have to dig out some areas and fill in others. Our old beds were wider and not as long, so we had to move a lot of dirt around.

If it dries off enough this week, I'll order a truck load of topsoil. What we don't use in the beds, we can use in other places in the yard. I'm going to get a new wheelbarrow tomorrow, so I can move dirt. DH will also get some metal rods to drive in the ground on the sides to keep the sides from bowing out.

Once we get all that done, then I can start planting - lettuce, carrots, radishes, cabbage, tomatoes, zuchinni squash, yellow squash, cucumbers, green peppers. The bed on the left in the picture below is smaller and I'm thinking I will plant herbs in it. .

Oh what wonderful possibilities I see! Some years ago I had 6 4X4 raised beds. I planted potatoes, eggplant, tomatoes, zucchini, peppers, and cucumbers. You would not believe the yield! Can't do this anymore because as the years passed the trees in the adjoining woods have shaded mostly everything. Can't wait to see what your beds look like after you've planted them!

Those raised beds look wondeerful! And is all the rest of that land yours?? It looks so sunny there I'm sure you will have huge crops. Care to send me a squash or two? Can't get them here except butternut squash usually flown from Brazil - not at all like picking your own!

Might try climbing french beans again, in tubs. Last year I did purple ones but they weren't very big croppers and it was a dreadful year for growing things anyway, we never did have a summer!!

You're getting a new wheelbarrow?! You're my kind of girl!

I wish hubby had time to help me make some raised beds. I collected rocks from the fields and put them around mine, plus filled it with rotted compost from the manure pile. It's like black gold. I'm planting tomatoes, peppers, and corn. I wish I had room for potatoes but I don't have any more strength left to dig up the grass and make it bigger.
